Finding work as a business consultant is very different than finding work as a regular employer. A consultant is usually brought in to give a company advice or expertise on a specific task.

This means that the template of a business consultant resume is going to look quite different from that of a regular resume. Your resume will also have to look quite different.

Something to remember is that as a consultant you are in business for yourself. Your resume is an advertisement for the business. The “product” that the business is selling is you and your expertise. Even though the resume is an advertisement it should not look an advertisement or a marketing brochure.

How the Template of a Business Consultant Resume Should Look

A business consultant resume should emphasize your expertise. The first thing that it should list is projects that you’ve successfully completed or managed. In particular you should list any past consulting work that you’ve done.

It should be a list of the projects you’ve completed successfully that you can update fairly quickly. Try to keep it as current as you can.

Below that you should list all job experience, training, education, licensing and certification directly related to your field of expertise.

What Looks Good on Business Consultant Resumes

Concrete examples of your success in the past. In particular projects you completed on time and under budget.

Examples of the way you improved business processes. If you can show that you made a process more efficient.

Knowledge of specific business processes that you have. The more detailed the better.

Technical knowledge you have of business machines.

Knowledge of software including certifications and classes in software that you have.

High level business experience particularly as an executive.

Experience in the business. The more the better list all the experience you have in the business even internships and entry level jobs. People like consultants with a lot of knowledge.

Any articles, papers, dissertations, books or reports you’ve written and published about the field. People like knowledgeable consultants.

Any advanced degrees in the field that you have obtained or you’re working on.

Details of projects you managed or helped manage at past jobs.

Examples of your success as a teacher or educator. In many cases, companies bring in consultants to educate existing employees about business processes or software.

Membership in professional associations. In particularly those that emphasize expertise in fields like engineering.

Some things you should list on documents other than your resume

References – These should be listed on a separate document. In particular you should list persons who can verify your experience and expertise as a consultant. Your customers for past consulting jobs. Make sure contact information is current.

Salary and payment – This should be decided in negotiation for the job. Only provide past salary information if it is specifically requested.

The scope and price of services. Try putting this on a separate brochure.

Before a person invests time, money and effort in a program to get a business degree they should be familiar with the basics of business education. A familiarity with the basics of business programs can help a person choose the right degree program.

What Business Programs Involve

Most programs of business education such as MBA and bachelors degrees in business administration involve study in the theories behind business. Many MBA programs involve study in finance and business leadership.

Many of these programs first seek to familiarize students with the various areas of business such as marketing, finance, accounting, and information technology. They then introduce the students to theoretical issues such as legal and ethical issues.

Most of the online programs seek to develop critical thinking among students by having them write papers about business problems. Really advanced programs such as PhDs will require a person to write a dissertation about a business issue or problem.

Business Program Skills

All online business programs will require students to have certain basic skills. These skills will be utilized in such aspects of the programs as writing. Some of the programs are designed to develop or improve these skills.

Basic skills required for business programs

Writing

Research

Computer skills

Mastery of programs such as Word and PowerPoint

Online research

Critical thinking

Analysis

Basic math such as algebra

Some schools will provide special courses for those who may not have a proficiency in these skills. It is advised that persons who may not have a background in such subjects take courses in them before entering a business program.

Other Basic Requirements for Online Business Programs

Time: the average program will require students to spend at least several hours a week writing and studying. Persons who can not devote the time should not take such programs.

Educational qualifications. Most programs will require that a student reach a certain level of education before entry. Associates and bachelor’s degree programs will almost always require a high school diploma or equivalent. Masters programs will usually require a bachelors’ degree.

Computer. You will need a reliable computer with a good internet connection. Many programs require you to do extensive amounts of research online. Quite a few demand the submission of papers and tests online.

Finance. Most online programs will require that you demonstrate that you can pay for the program. You must either have a specific income level or prove that you can qualify for financial aid. Most schools will help you get financial aid.

Basic Decisions You Should Make Before Entering a Business Program

The type of degree that you want.

The subject that you intend to study or the specialty.

The amount of time you intend to devote to the program.

The length of time you want to spend to get your degree.

The amount of money you intend to spend or can spend.

The purpose for your degree. IE to get a better job or a specific job.

The school or program you want to attend.

This is a sample of a resume for the position of business process analyst. The main thing to remember when writing a resume for a position such as this one is to keep it simple and list only job related information.

Keep the resume as short and as simple as possible. This will make it easier to read and more likely to get read. Listing only pertinent information is the best and easiest way to keep a resume short and simple.

Something to keep in mind is that there is no such thing as the perfect resume. Any basic resume that lists the information in a clear and concise manner will probably do.

Wrote college thesis on Sprocket production for MBA program.

Analysis:

This resume is perhaps a little too long. It is good because it demonstrates real world experience.

In a resume for a position such as a business process analyst you must demonstrate experience. You should try to state what kind of experience from the jobs you held and mention specific projects you worked on.

Something you should be careful not to do is to divulge proprietary information. This can be unethical and it can get into legal trouble with former employers.

If you want to mention specific projects or actions taken at past jobs you should ask your former employer if it’s okay to mention that. The last thing you want to do is compromise business secrets or classified data.

Also make sure that you can show perspective employer any documents you mention in the resume. This includes reports and studies. Real documents can present your analysts skills.

An effective cover letter can help you get a position in e-business development. Fortunately writing an effective cover letter is a pretty simple task that anybody should be able to complete fairly quickly.

There are also some tricks to effective cover-letter writing that you should apply while looking for a career in e-business. The average person should be able to apply these tricks and write an effective cover letter.

Some tips for writing an effective e-business cover letter:

Keep it short. A cover letter should always be fairly short. Shorter cover letters are more likely to be read, longer cover letters will probably get trashed.

Keep it simple. A short paragraph explaining that you are applying for a specific job and that you are qualified for it is all you will need.

Keep it specific and to the point. Make sure you state that you are applying for such a job and you are qualified for it. Also state that you will take the job if offered. Don’t waste several paragraphs describing what a wonderful human being you are.

Don’t put non-job related information in cover letters. This is one of the biggest mistakes people make when writing cover letters. Don’t talk about your family, volunteer work, military experience or anything that doesn’t directly apply to the job. Employers may not care about this and it make you look like an egotistical fool.

Rewrite it several times. The secret to good writing is the ability to go back and write something over again several times. Write the cover letter over again until you like it. Be willing to throw it out and rewrite it as needed.

Have somebody else read it. A good way to write an effective cover letter is to have somebody else read it. Make sure it is somebody who will be critical and offer useful criticism. It can be your spouse, a friend, a coworker, a member of a job hunting support group, anybody.

Make sure the grammar and spelling is correct. If you have a writing program such as Microsoft Word it has spelling and grammar check features. Use them. Also read the cover letter and look for mistakes. Have somebody else do the same thing.

List only information related to e-business positions in your cover letter. Make sure that information listed is applicable to e-business development. Try to focus only what makes you qualified for an e-business development position.

Don’ t repeat what you say in your resume. Many people make the mistake of simply repeating what they list in their resume when they create a cover letter.

Treat your cover letter as an introduction to your resume. Your cover letter is an introduction to your resume. This means that it is an invitation to read your resume, so always keep that in mind when writing it.

The cover letter should make the person reading it want to read your resume. If a potential employer doesn’t want to read your resume after reading your cover letter you’ve wasted your time.

If you’re a professional musician or somebody with a background in music you probably don’t know much about resumes. Unfortunately you will probably need a resume if you want to get a job in the music business.

Recording companies, radio, music companies and other business organizations will expect you to have a resume. Fortunately creating an effective music business resume is a simple task that anybody who can type or use a computer should be able to accomplish.

Resume Basics

The best way to find an effective resume is to find a good basic resume online and to simply copy it. There are also many excellent resume templates out there.

Writing programs like Microsoft Word and Word Perfect contain resume templates. All you have to do is to type in the information that you need.

Basic Resume Tips

Create your resume in Microsoft Word. This is the world’s most popular writing program. Almost everybody will be able to open your resume if it’s in word. If you e-mail a resume in a program like Word Perfect a lot of people won’t be able to open it.

Have a copy of your resume on your computer that you can email out quickly and print quickly when you need it.

If they want a paper copy of your resume simply print it out on plain white typing paper. Contrary to popular belief fancy resume paper won’t help you get a job. Employers are interested in what’s on the paper, not what kind of paper you use.

What to Put on Your Resume

Any education beyond high school. This includes college, trade school, vocational and other courses you’ve taken. Don’t list high school. Put education that has a direct bearing on the job first.

Any job experience directly related to the position you’re applying for. If you’re applying for a music-industry job list any experience you’ve had with a band or a working musician.

When you write a business resume one of your main tasks is to list your qualifications for the duties that you will perform in a job. This means that you will have to demonstrate your ability to perform those duties.

Many people fail to do this because they fail to take the duties of jobs into consideration when they compose a resume. This means the resume is little than a list of skills, experience and education that may have little or no bearing on the position for which you are applying.

How Duties Can Affect a Business Resume

You should try to learn the duties of jobs that you are applying for. Then you should review your resume and see if you have skills, expertise, education or experience that is applicable to those jobs.

If a job that you are a applying for has a lot of data entry you should list your experience with data entry on your resume. You should also list your data entry oriented skills such as your typing speed and your speed of key strokes per minute on the resume.

If the job involves working with a sales team you might list your sales experience on the resume. If position involves work at a warehouse you might list summer or college jobs you had in warehouses in the past. You might also list any warehouse skills you have such as the ability to drive a forklift.

Making a Duty Oriented Resume

The best way to make a duty oriented resume is to sit down and think about past jobs. Then write down all the duties that you had to perform on those jobs. Try and list everything including menial tasks like doing the mail run or running a cash register.

You should do this because many companies like employees that can multitask. They also like workers who can fill for others who are sick or on vacation. A company might like an administrative assistant who can do the mail run or operate the big copier.

Such willingness to fill in also demonstrates teamwork which is a personality trait that many employees work for. A person that can fill several positions is much more likely to get hired in many organizations.

Specific Duties You Should List on Business Resumes

A good way to list prior positions on business resumes is to simply make a list of the duties that you performed. This can show how versatile and capable you are and demonstrate your ability to multitask.

An example of such a listing would like this:

Administrative Assistant at ABC Company

Data entry

Wrote business letters

Sorted mail

Operated postal meter

Operated copier

Filled in for receptionist on an as needed basis

Supported vice president of sales

Did mail run on an as needed basis

Ordered office supplies

Operated scanner

Filing

Wrote and edited documents for vice president of sales

Created expense reports

Something to remember is that listing a lot of duties can make you look versatile. Yet you should also keep resumes as short as possible because shorter resumes are more likely to get read.

Writing a small business resume is a relatively simple process, it is also an important one. Every small business owner should have a resume.

Reasons why small business owners should have a resume:

A resume is a great way to describe your business qualifications to potential customers.

A resume is also a really good way to describe your business to lenders and potential investors. Persons who want to finance your business will need to know your qualifications. A resume is a great way to tell them.

A resume is also a great way to describe your qualifications to potential suppliers, vendors, partners and other colleagues.

Writing a Small Business Resume Made Easy

Fortunately writing a small business resume is a pretty easy task. If you have a computer and a writing program such as Microsoft Word you have many excellent resume writing tools available. To find them all you have to do is click on the new documents tab and then on other documents. Some versions of Word even contain a resume wizard.

Once you’ve located a resume template all you have to do is type in the information. Anybody should be able to do this and create a professional-looking small business resume in less than half an hour.

Steps for Writing a Small Business Resume

Choose Template

Enter Information

Proofread resume.

As you can see there are three basic steps for writing a small business resume. Once you’ve got the template you’ll have to type in the information.

Simply list your business as your current job and your current position as owner. Then list experience in other businesses that you’ve operated and jobs that you’ve held.

Try and list everything that you do in your business when writing the resume. This makes you look really good which is the ultimate point of any resume.

Keys to Writing Effective Small Business Resumes

The basic purpose of a resume is to demonstrate that you are qualified for a position. The basic purpose of a small business resume is to demonstrate that you are qualified to provide the good or service that your business offers.

For example a small business resume for Joe’s Heating and Air Conditioning Service would state Joe’s qualifications as a HVAC technician. It would list licenses Joe has, any education or training Joe has in HVAC maintenance and repair and the number of years he’s spent in the business.

A small business resume should also demonstrate the owner’s skill as a business operator. This means it should state how profitable the business it is and perhaps list income or cash flow. Small business resumes provided to lenders and investors should definitely state this.

Such a resume should also list basic business skills such as:

Business plan writing

Bookkeeping and accounting

Cash management

Cost management

Inventory

Marketing

Sales

Management

Shipping and receiving

Office management

Legal expertise

Financial knowledge

Software and computer knowledge

Investors and lenders in particular look for these things because they want to see that an owner has basic business skills. If the resume doesn’t list these things it is a waste of paper.

The best way to learn how to write an effective resume is to take a look at other resumes. The more examples of resumes you look at the more you will know and the more effective your resume will be.

The best place to find examples of resumes is online. There are hundreds of resume sites many of which contain both sample resumes and resume templates. A good way to examine these resumes is to print them out and read them.

Pay close attention to what you like and what you don’t like. Also look for resumes that are easier to read.

Examples of An Entry Level Business Resume:

Resume One:

John Smith

Address:

Phone Number:

Email:

Fax:

Objective: Seeking an Entry Level Position in the Financial Services Industry. (This should always be specific don’t list long term career goals)

Education: Bachelor’s degree in business from Empire State University with a minor in accounting. June, 2010 GPA: 3.0

Job Experience:

Internship in accounting department at Acme Corporation December, 2009-April 2010. Assisted accounts payable coordinator. Data entry of invoices, resolution of invoice problems.

Assistant Manager at Starbucks May 2004-Present. Duties included interviewing of job applicants, hiring, termination of employees, nightly cash count, inventory, ordering of supplies, payroll, coffee making.

Skills: Accounts payable, accounts receivable, hiring, termination, interviewing of employees, cash handling, cash register operation, retail sales, accounting, billing, inventory, management, payroll, ordering, invoicing, computer programs including Word, Excel, Quickbooks, Oracle.

This is a very effective resume because it is simple and to the point. It contains a lot of detailed business oriented information.

Here is an example of a pretty bad resume:

Resume Two:

Bob Jones

Email:

(Major Mistake limited contact information, many people prefer telephone to e-mail. Listing an address is also a good idea it shows you have a permanent residence.)

Objective: To launch a career in the advertising industry and gain experience in marketing so I can one day start my own advertising agency.

(This shows you are ambitious but it doesn’t state what job Bob is looking for in a job)

Education: 1999 Graduate of Smallville High School. GPA: 3.40 Member of Glee Club, Football Team, Honors Society and Marching Band. (None of this information is the least bet relevant to a career in advertising. It’s also a waste of paper almost everybody graduates high school these days).

2004 Graduate of Football State University. GPA: 2.5 Bachelor’s degree in business studies. Member of Football Team, LaCross Team, Phi Delta Phi Fraternity, Democratic Party Club, Campus Crusade for Christ, Gay Students Alliance, Kryptonian Students Club (Once again lots of useless information. Also it’s illegal for employers to ask about your religion, ethnic background, sexuality, etc.)

Interests: Gay rights, punk rock music, international travel, evangelism, Kryptonian cuisine. (This space would be better served by a list of job skills).

Job Experience: December 2005-December 2010 waiter at Greasy’s Café. (Bob isn’t looking for a job in a restaurant)

Volunteered at Salvation Army and Homeless shelter. (Yes that’s great but it has nothing to do with advertising)

Organizations belonged to: Westside Christian Church, Garage Band, Gay Alliance, Democratic Club, Eastside Comic Book Collector’s Club. (Information that’s unnecessary).

Conclusion

The big problem with this resume is that it doesn’t list any experience or skills related to the position that Bob actually wants. There’s no reason why an advertising agency should hire Bob.

An employer simply isn’t going to care about 95% of the stuff Bob lists. Bob has basically wasted his time creating this resume. An effective resume should look like John’s, it’s simple to the point and it lists things that an employer might care about.

When you are applying for a position such as an e-business specialist the qualifications are one of the most critical parts of your resume. The qualifications tell a potential employer that you are capable of doing the job.

A well written set of qualifications can show a potential employer that you are willing to come in and get straight to work. Qualifications can show an employer what your capabilities and expertise are.

An e-business specialist must have knowledge in business, software, the internet, web design and many other specialties. Most employers will expect an e-business specialist to multitask so you will need many different qualifications for such a position.

Education Qualifications for E-Business Specialist Resume

A degree in business, finance or a related field. The more advanced the better. Many employers will expect an e-business specialist to have at least an MBA.

A degree in a subject such as computer science, software design or information technology. This can be either an associate’s degree or a bachelors’ degree.

A mix of business and technical degrees for example a BA in information technology and an MBA in e-business.

Some employers may also expect a more advanced degree such as a PhD in information technology, management or computer science.

Skill Qualifications for E-Business Specialist Resume

Project management

Decision making

Leadership

Critical thinking

Finance

Computer Science

Software design

Website design

Finance

Knowledge of legal issues associated with the internet and e-commerce.

Knowledge of internet marketing and advertising.

Some knowledge of media including writing and editing.

Some knowledge of graphic arts including website design.

Experience Qualifications for E-Business Specialist Resume

Generally, a person will need several years of experience in internet commerce or e-business.

Experience managing e-business projects.

Experience managing websites

Experience designing, setting up and maintaining websites.

Experience with new technologies such as twitter and texting.

Experience with online marketing.

Experience with e-commerce tools such as electronic shopping carts.

How to List Qualifications on a Resume

The best way to list qualifications on a resume is to list experience and skills before you list education. You should do this because employers like to see individuals who have had hands on experience with e-commerce and e-business.

The most valuable experience to list will be successfully management e-business projects. The more project management experience that you can show the better.

In many cases businesses hiring e-business specialists know little or nothing about e-commerce themselves. They want somebody who is qualified to take care of it. That is why project management is such a critical skill.

Decision making, leadership and critical thinking are vital skills because e-business specialists have to make many decisions themselves. They may have to make these decisions quickly with little or knowledge so they need to know how to think on their feet.

A background in entrepreneurship or small business is also a vital qualification because it demonstrates you have leadership and critical thinking skills.
