The secret to writing an effective business resume cover letter is to make yourself look attractive while keeping it short. Most people never figure this out so their cover levers are not effective.

There are a few tricks that you can employ when creating a business resume cover letter. If you remember these tricks you’ll save yourself a lot of time and trouble and write a cover letter more likely to get read.

Some Things You Can Do to Get a Business Resume Cover Letter Read

• Keep it short. The biggest mistake that most people make when they write a cover letter is to make it to long. A cover letter should not be any longer than one or two paragraphs because longer ones will not get read.

• Keep it simple. The next big mistake made in cover letters is that people make them complicated and confusing. Keep it simple and it will be more effective. A simple letter that says “here is my resume I am applying for such and such a position” is usually best.

• Don’t repeat what you say in your resume. There is no need to list any information you include in your resume in a cover letter. Many people make the mistake of repeating their resume.

• Make it professional. You should make the letter as professional possible because you are applying for a professional position.

• Proofread it. Read the letter over and look for errors several times before sending it. If it is e-mailed print it out and proofread. One mistake will get your resume and letter tossed in the trash so proofread.

• Don’t list salary information unless the employer asks for it.

• Don’t list references on your cover letter, instead put them on a separate document.

• Make sure you list your contact information including your e-mail, telephone numbers, fax, mailing address etc.

• Always try to address the letter to a specific person. If you know who is doing the hiring address the letter to them.

• Make sure you address the person it is going to as Mr. or Ms. Don’t address them by their first name and only use a title such as Dr. if you know for certain they use.

• Never assume a woman is addressed as Mrs. Instead address her as Ms. unless for certain that she is married and prefers Mrs.

• Don’t use any type that is hard to read such as Italics. Make the resume easy to read.

• Use a simple easy to read layout for cover letters. Don’t use elaborate layouts that are hard to read.

• If you e-mail your cover letter send it is an Adobe PDF or a Microsoft Word document. These are the two most popular formats. Don’t use other formats such as Word Perfect because many people won’t be able to open such documents.

• Embed or attach your resume directly to e-mailed cover letters. That way people will be able to open them up and examine them.
